Dieser Artikel nutzt die Polarisierungsdebatte, die sich im Nachklang der Coronapan-demie entfaltet hat und auch den Kongress der Deutschen Gesellschaft für Soziologie 2022 prägte, als Aus-gangspunkt. Er stellt einen Ansatz der wissenssoziologischen Diskursforschung vor, der Materialität, Organi-sation und Situation in den Fokus rückt. Anschließend skizziert der Artikel das Konzept der transformativen Diskursforschung. Dieser Ansatz sucht Verbindungen zwischen der wissenssoziologischen Diskursanalyse und einer interpretativen Perspektive, die strukturelle Bedingungen und systemische Effekte hervorhebt, wie sie von Reichertz (2020) in Folge von Froschauer und Lueger (2018, 2020a, 2020b, 2023) als »Wiener Schule der interpretativen Sozialforschung« vorgeschlagen wurde. Zwei entscheidende Schnittpunkte ergeben sich: die Bedeutung von Artefakten als »materialisierte Kommunikation« und die Rolle organisationaler Struktu-ren als Vermittlerinnen zwischen diskursiven Adressierungen und Handelnden in situativen Kontexten. \nThis article takes the polarization debate, which has unfolded in the aftermath of the pandemic, as its starting point, a discussion that also characterized the Congress of the German Society for Sociology in 2022. It introduces a perspective within the sociology of knowledge approach to discourse, that turns the spotlight on materiality, organization, and situations. Subsequently, the article outlines the concept of transformative discourse research. This approach seeks to explore connections between the sociology of knowledge approach to discourse and an interpretative perspective, emphasizing structural conditions and systemic effects, as proposed by Reichertz (2020) in line with Froschauer and Lueger (2018, 2020a, 2020b, 2023) as the »Viennese School of Interpretive Social Research«. Two critical points of intersection emerge: the significance of artifacts as »materialized communication« and the role of organizational structures as intermediaries between discursive addresses and actors in situational contexts.
