Being a Refugee in Urban Space: Syrian Women in Gaziantep

Zusammenfassung

Turkey is at the forefront of countries affected by the crisis in Syria due both to its geographical proximity to that country and its use as a migration route by Syrian refugees heading for European states. Since the start of the conflict in Syria in 2011, Turkey has hosted approximately 3.2 million Syrians, according to official data. Almost all these Syrians live in urban centres, where they encounter the host society in many different areas but especially in socio-cultural fields, the labour market, and certain public spaces. But Syrian refugees have not settled in all Turkish cities at the same rate. This article focuses on the daily lives of Syrian women, reporting on how they experience urban life and access services in the centre of Gaziantep, where approximately one in every five people is Syrian.
